George Zimmerman Walks, What Now?

Three weeks of testimony and 17-hours deliberation George Zimmerman is found “Not Guilty” in the killing of 17-year old Trayvon Martin.

Zimmerman shot and killed 17-year-old Martin after a “scuffle” in a gated condominium complex in Sanford, Fla., on February 26, 2012. The case instantly became racially charged due to the circumstances of Martin’s death “a black, unarmed teen shot after being tailed by Zimmerman for merely looking suspicious”. Zimmerman wasn’t taken into custody or charged until 46 days AFTER the murder.

The case came down to proving “reasonable doubt”. Was Zimmerman protecting himself or was he acting in a malice manner. Hard to prove what happen with Martin dead. The defense got to work painting Zimmerman as the “poor fighter” who was overpowered by a young, black teenager. He acted in self-defense by killing an unarmed Martin.

During his closing statement, attorney Mark O’Mara brought a slab of concrete into the courtroom, arguing that the teen used the sidewalk as a weapon.

Unfortunately, following someone whether on feet or by car is legal. More unfortunately for Martin and his family that Zimmerman walked away as a known murderer whose been given back the very weapon that ended Martin’s life.

So what happens now?

Federal charges could come down from the Department of Justice, the DOJ launched an investigation last March to investigate whether Martin’s shooting was a hate crime. They released a statement in July 2012 saying that no evidence supports that the shooting was indeed a hate crime. Very unlikely that this will happen, in fact, it would walk the line of unconstitutional.

A civil lawsuit from Martin’s family. The Martin’s reached a settlement with the homeowners association (that didn’t include Zimmerman) in April. The amount was not disclosed. Very common for families to seek justice in civil court.

The public.People feel very strongly about this case. Not just African Americans but people who can sympathize with having a son. That could’ve been anyone’s child. Despite what anyone feels about Zimmerman, this case is about something bigger. The system and it’s flaws. May whatever God he serves protect him from himself, he’s obviously the following type.

Trayvon Martin’s family gets some peace of mine today. The 17-year-old was shot and killed by neighborhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman on Feb 26, 2012. The parents of Trayvon won an out of court setllement against the Florida Homeowner Association for $1 million dollars.

Zimmerman has since been charged with second-degree murder, but he says he fired in self defense after the 17-year-old attacked him.

The Orlando Sentinel reported.

“It is understood and agreed that the payment made herein is not to be construed as an admission of any liability by or on behalf of the releasing parties; but instead the monies being paid hereunder is consideration for avoiding litigation, the uncertainties stemming from litigation as well as to protect and secure the good name and good will of the released parties,”
